STM design process

A strut-and-tie model design in AStrutTie follows six steps, and the software keeps each step's output as the input of the next:

  • 1 · Fix the design conditions — geometry, loads, boundary conditions, materials, and load combinations
  • 2 · Understand the stress field — plane-solid FE analysis: Stress Flow and/or ESO
  • 3 · Construct the strut-and-tie model — from a template, by DXF import, or by direct modeling
  • 4 · Analyze the truss — determinate models by statics, indeterminate models by stiffness analysis
  • 5 · Verify strengths — struts (βs), nodal zones (βn), tie steel areas, and anchorage at critical nodes
  • 6 · Report — all checks and a bill of materials in one calculation report, in HTML (opens in Word · prints to PDF)
Concept sketch — dashed = strut (compression), solid = tie (tension), dots = nodes. Not to scale.
