STEP 1: Define a design region (or member), and decide initial design conditions.

STEP 2: Construct a strut-tie model for the region (or member).

STEP 3: Determine the cross-sec. forces of struts and ties. The req’d cross-sec. areas of struts and ties must be determined within their eff. strength limits. If one of the req’d areas is larger than its max. cross-sec. area, return to STEP 1.

STEP 4: Check the strength conditions of nodal zones. If a nodal zone does not satisfy its strength condition, strengthen the nodal zone (by modifying the bearing plate size or rebar anchorage method) or return to STEP 1.

STEP 5: Determine the req’d areas of rebar. The provisions of rebar placement, anchorage, and minimum rebar must be satisfied.

This posting shows very simple design process using the Strut-Tie Model. Next time we’ll deal with selecting Strut-Tie model, effective strength of elements(strut, tie, nodal zone) in detail. You can refer sample design of  AStrutTie and AStrutTie3d for specific working-level of Strut-Tie model.
